13:40 to 14:25

Session:

Panel: Bridging the gap between transport and energy

Description:

Transport cannot be decarbonised one mode at a time, but instead requires a holistic approach that recognises the greater efficiency of some energy pathways and the limited availability of sustainable biofuels. In this session, we will look at the different pathways and how to get them to the same level of maturity (on policy and to achieve full scale). We will discuss questions such as

• Can the grid cope with extra demand from Electric Transport be it cars, aircraft…

• Is the biofuel industry approaching a feedstock crunch? Are we in competition?

• Hydrogen infrastructure conundrum

14:25 to 14:45

Session:

Keynote: Jet Zero

Description:

At SSWS23 Jet Zero Council publishes 2-year-plan to support wider target of decarbonising aviation sector by 2050. Time for a midpoint check. Any adjustments needed at this point or are we on track?

14:45 to 14:55

Session:

Keynote: The EU’s Ban on Greenwashing – Everything You Need to Know

• Carbon Removal Incentives

15:40 to 16:00

Session:

Keynote

16:00 to 16:45

Session:

Panel: Race to the finish line

Description:

SAF Ambition vs. Delivery According to DfT their new measures to support sustainable aviation fuel industry, along with the introduction of a SAF mandate in 2025, will provide fuel security, grow the economy and help to create new jobs by 2030. But is this enough to get us to target? What are the lessons learnt from the first transatlantic flight?

16:45 to 17:30

Session:

Panel: Carbon Removals, “not just an option – but a necessity”

Description:

Unsurprisingly, the IPCC's latest report (March, 2023) highlights the need to implement CO2 removal methods to achieve Net Zero CO2 or GHG. Air Canada, United Airlines, easyJet are among the airlines that have invested in carbon-capture technologies. Furthermore, UK ETS Reform July 2023 states aviation businesses need to buy allowances for every tonne of carbon emitted under the scheme.

Show Welcome

09:50 to 10:10

Session:

Keynote

Description:

Non-CO2 effects account for two-thirds of aviation’s total climate impact, but no mitigation measures have made it so far in the EU’s aviation climate package. What is the industry doing to address its full impact?

10:10 to 10:55

Session:

Panel: Flight emissions and climate change: it’s not only about CO2

Description:

Despite scientific advancement many flight emissions calculators do not account for non-CO2 effects, resulting in a gross underestimation of the total climate footprint of a flight. In this session, we’ll discuss the non-CO2 effects. We’ll touch on the global assessment of contrails, uncertainties and mitigation strategies. Our experts will update us on the latest science.

10:55 to 11:15

Session:

Fireside chat: Adaptation measures to increase climate resilience of airports

Description:

Airports are classified as critical infrastructure due to their essential role in both mobility and economic growth. However, due to their fixed infrastructures and high vulnerability to disruptive weather events, they are particularly vulnerable to the potential consequences of climate change, which can create both operational and commercial impacts. It is therefore necessary to develop resilience to climate-related risks to protect the vital airport infrastructure and ensure the service continuity of airport operations.

11:15 to 11:35

Session:

Keynote: Hydrogen and its potential in aviation

11:35 to 12:10

Session:

Panel – Meeting the challenges for hydrogen integration

Description:

Airports and airfields will play a critical part in enabling the aims of ZEF. As a result, they urgently need to plan for the required infrastructure, which must evolve rapidly to meet the needs of future operations. Roll-out of this next-generation infrastructure will have to be managed with both maximum safety and minimum service disruption. he first hydrogen-fuelled service is expected to be operational in the UK as early as 2024. This timeframe highlights the need for an urgent change to fundamental infrastructure to enable and support hydrogen operations.

12:10 to 12:50

Session:

LUNCH BREAK

12:50 to 13:05

Session:

Keynote: Unlocking Investment in the Service of Sustainable Growth

13:05 to 13:50

Session:

Panel: A Deep Dive into Finance

Description:

With the convergence of CSRD and CORSIA compliance pressures impacting aviation players within 2 years, it is natural to see an increase in transition, green and sustainability-linked financing in the aviation sector. However, while we’ve seen increasingly novel financing products, creditors are getting increasingly concerned about reputational and greenwashing litigation risk. The industry needs to develop more targeted KPIs in sustainability-linked financing to help prevent greenwashing, assess metrics to measure aircraft and engine efficiency and decarbonisation effectiveness and focus on decoupling CO2 emissions trends from capacity growth, amongst other objectives. In this session, we’ll also discuss how the Government sees their role in driving private investment into the Net Zero transition.

13:50 to 14:10

Session:

Keynote: Revolutionising Airport Pushbacks

Description:

Earlier this year, Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling made headlines with the announcement of its partnership with WheelTug. The use of the latter's technology allows Vueling's aircraft to push back without using their engines, providing optimum sustainability in the sense that it delays the engine startup until the latest possible moment, reducing emissions.

14:25 to 15:10

Session:

Panel: What makes a sustainable Airport

Description:

Airports have the opportunity to adopt low emission development strategies, optimise their energy and resource use, pioneer the use of electric vehicles within their estates, embed circular economy principles as they build new capacity, and drive socially valuable outcomes for local populations. In this session, we’ll discuss the opportunities and challenges they face developing highly integrated approaches.

15:55 to 16:00

Session:
